The Hamlets team up with the East End Film Festival to screen Onur Saylak’s refugee drama Daha/More

The Hamlets Pop-Up Cinema and its parent body, film charity Balik Arts, are pleased to announce they are working with the organisers of the East End Film Festival (EEFF) to promote one of the foreign language films being screened at this year’s festival.

Since launching last September, community cinema The Hamlets has carved out a good name for itself with monthly screenings of world cinema in the east end borough of Tower Hamlets. One of its biggest turnouts was for the screening of Turkish documentary My Suburban Story.

For EEFF 2018, The Hamlets and Balik Arts are supporting the screening of Daha (‘More’), a film made in Turkey about human traffickers exploiting refugees attempting to cross from the war-torn Middle East into Europe.

Daha (More) is the directorial debut of Turkish actor Onur Saylak. The film, director and actors picked up several awards at film festivals following its release last year.

The story is an impressive screen adaptation of Hakan Günday’s award-winning thriller of the same name, and features a 14-year-old boy, Gaza (Hayat Van Eck), eager to follow in the footsteps of his ruthless human trafficking father played by Ahmet Mumtaz Taylan.

Based on the Aegean, on Turkey’s southern coast, Gaza’s family have adapted their transport business to instead carry Syrian and Afghan refugees seeking a new life in Europe. The story shows the darkness of their journey and the impact seeing such brutality on a daily basis has on the outlook and temperament of a young boy forced to grow up in a world where there's no room for innocence.

After making its UK debut at a screening in Glasgow last month, Daha/More will receive its London premiere at the Rio Cinema in Hackney on 25th April. The film’s classification has been rated as 18.

EEFF 2018 runs between 11 April and 29 April. Founded in 2000, EEFF is one of the UK’s largest film festivals offering a rich and diverse programme of films from local and international movie-makers. Screenings and other events take place in a variety of venues across the boroughs of Hackney and Tower Hamlets. Check online for the full programme.
